Hills and mountains dominate the New Zealand landscape and there isn't a New Zealander living in either town or country, who hasn't been affected in some way or other by their very presence! They stand aloof and remote, with their bush clad valleys and barren windswept slopes sizzling in summer heat and freezing in winter cold. Although some parts of the high country still pose an insurmountable barrier, their dramatic beauty and rugged character remain deeply entrenched in our country's music and bush poetry. My sincere thanks go to all those people, who have believed in and actively supported the collection, preservation, publication and recording of New Zealand's folklore over the years. This country boasts a colourful and exciting heritage, which is often reflected in our songs, stories, yarns and verse. What’s more it stands up well, wherever one goes in this wide and varied world of ours.
