The Fires of Rarotonga, a New Zealand-based Rarotongan group, bring together both performing experience and songwriting talent. Tutu Ringiao, leader of the group had already written many songs which had been performed by both Cook Islanders and Tahitians, when the boys in a group called the Wanderers approached him for assistance and guidance - leading to the formation of the highly successful “Fires of Rarotonga”.
The Fires of Rarotonga subsequently released a number of albums through Kiwi Pacific (on the HIBISCUS label) - all of which were very well received here in New Zealand and The Cook Islands, but also much further afield in other Pacific nations and in the U.S.A. particularly.
In the recordings Tutu sings the lead vocal, and the three brothers Faipoto Apolo (lead guitar), Zephania Apolo (bass guitar), and Tiaki Apolo (banjo-ukulele) sing the vocal harmony, Puru Makai is the drummer. All the lyrics and tunes were written by Tutu Ringiao. The meanings of the songs seem to have a special appeal, and compliments have come from people in many different places.
