Indonesia / Java

Java's extraordinarily rich musical heritage includes not only the relatively familiar classical music and traditional village styles, but a range of enchanting street popular idioms, some of which are astonishing to people who know only gamelan and such modern takes on traditional idioms as jaipongan. Even compared with other parts of Indonesia, Java has an amazingly large number of street musicians. This seems to be both because the island has an ancient tradition of roving entertainers, and because it is enormously over-populated and thus impoverished. This generation of street musicians (called ngamen in Indonesian) performs both in markets and in the traditional residential kampungs, either for tips or (in the case of a prearranged performance) for a set fee. Street musicians mix without jealousy or competition, often forming ad hoc groups and splitting the take at the end of the day, though there are also regularly constituted ensembles. These musicians are heirs and guardians of a singularly rich group of idioms.
