Nothing can stir the imagination quite like the New Zealand high country, with its rugged beauty and dramatic character, which has inspired countless artists, poets, musicians and photographers to scale its creative heights. Windswept tussock grassland is an integral part of our mountain landscape and it has become deeply entrenched in the New Zealand consciousness. Kiwis can’t help but be affected by, or identify with the high country and its cultural heritage. This is the domain of the large station runs, their terrain and traditional lifestyle often dominated by slopes of waving tussock – the very lifeblood of the high country.

For the most part this album reflects my feelings for “The land beyond the cities, where the real New Zealand lies.” I am indebted to many poets, rhymsters and balladeers – in particular Henry Lawson, David McKee Wright, Cecil Winter, George Meek, Tod Symons, Ross McMillan and Joe Charles, not only for their contributions to New Zealand’s folk heritage, but for showing me the way!
